Advisory Process

Whatever the challenge there are ways and means of overcoming those really big problems. Advisory Boards can help you shape the choices.

1. Initiation

The Initiation stage involves setting the foundation by clarifying the purpose of the advisory board and establishing its scope. Organisations need to identify the challenges or opportunities that require external insight, such as market entry, innovation, or project support. A defined Advisory Board Charter is developed at this stage, outlining objectives, roles, boundaries, and expected outcomes, ensuring alignment with organisational strategy from the outset.

2. Recruitment

Once the purpose is defined, the Recruitment stage focuses on selecting the right advisors. Using the framework, leaders consider diverse skills, experience, and networks that align with the identified objectives. Advisors are not chosen for prestige alone but based on their ability to provide independent, practical advice. Formal engagement agreements are set in place to clarify expectations, confidentiality, and remuneration, thereby building trust and setting the tone for collaboration

3. Operation

The Operation stage emphasizes how the advisory board functions in practice. Meetings are structured, purposeful, and collaborative, guided by the pre-established charter. Advisors provide insights, challenge assumptions, and offer strategic opportunities, while management remains responsible for decision-making.

4. Renewal

An Advisory Board has a purpose. Once that purpose is met. The charter needs to be redefined. The Renewal stage ensures the Advisory Board remains relevant. At defined intervals, performance and alignment are reviewed, with adjustments made to membership, scope, or processes as needed. This stage reinforces the advisory board’s value and sustainability over time.
